Biography

Yuanfan Yang portrait

Born in Edinburgh and now based in Leeds, Yuanfan Yang is establishing himself as one of today’s most distinctive and versatile musical voices. An award‑winning pianist, composer, and improviser, he has been praised for interpretations of Schumann and Liszt that “rivalled those of the young Ashkenazy” (International Piano Magazine), while his own compositions have been described as possessing “soulful poignancy” (The Observer).

His repertoire reflects a broad curiosity across musical styles, mirrored in his signature improvisations and original works. Alongside instrumental and vocal compositions, Yuanfan has written four full‑scale piano concertos, performed across China, France, Russia, and the UK.

Recent highlights include concerto debuts with the BBC Philharmonic (Ye’s Concerto of Life, recorded for BBC Radio 3), the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra (Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 3, live‑streamed on Medici.tv), and the Orchestra of Opera North, where he premiered his own Piano Concerto No. 4 Ode to the Jing River. He also performed his concerto with Manchester Camerata at Stoller Hall in 2024.

Further engagements have taken him to Sydney Opera House, Brighton Festival, Beaminster Festival, St George’s Bristol, and Milano Auditorium. His improvisational craft is a hallmark of his performances: audiences suggest themes and styles, and Yuanfan creates original music spontaneously. In 2025, he presented his first fully improvised concert in London, livestreamed on YouTube.

Yuanfan’s numerous accolades include 1st Prize and Audience Prize at the Casagrande International Piano Competition (Italy, 2022), 2nd Prize and multiple special awards at the First Ljubljana Festival International Piano Competition (Slovenia, 2023), and 1st Prize at the UK International Piano Open Competition (2023). In 2023, he became the first British laureate of the Sydney International Piano Competition in over 40 years.

He has appeared as concerto soloist with leading orchestras including the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Northern Sinfonia, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Romanian Radio National Symphony Orchestra, Wuhan Philharmonic Orchestra, and Minnesota Orchestra.

As a composer, Yuanfan draws inspiration from allegories, cultures, and narrative imagery. His works have been broadcast on BBC Two, BBC Four, and BBC Radio 3, and have received awards from the BBC Proms Young Composers’ Competition, the National Centre for Early Music, the Golden Key International Composition Competition, and the Rachmaninoff International Music Competition, where his Piano Concerto No. 3 won 1st Prize & Gold Medal.

His debut album Watercolour, released on Orchid Classics, received critical acclaim including 4★ from International Piano Magazine. He holds the International Artist Diploma from the Royal Northern College of Music and previously graduated with first‑class honours from both the Royal College of Music and the Royal Academy of Music.
